Resolved Question: Thoughts on the 2010 Kansas City Royals?

1 September 2010, 7:18 am

Soon the Kansas City Royals will probably be the sixth team in baseball to be officially taken out of 2010 playoff contention (their "elimination number" is 11). They currently have the second-worst record in the American League Central with 56-76 (.424). The Kansas City Royals are historically a below-average team. Since starting in 1969, the franchise has a losing record of 3,199 wins and 3,436 losses. The Royals have made it to the playoffs 7 times, won 2 American League pennants, and won the World Series in 1985 after defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in 7 games (though many fans agree that a blown call by umpire Don Denkinger in the ninth inning of Game 6 may have cost the Cardinals the win). The Royals' last winning season was in 2003, and before that, the shortened 1994 season. Let's look at the facts about this year: First game of season: Beaten by the Detroit Tigers 4-8 in Kansas City (April 5) Longest losing streak of season: Lost 7 consecutive games to the White Sox, Rangers, and Indians (May 5-12) MANAGERIAL CHANGE: Royals replaced manager Trey Hillman with Ned Yost (May 13) Best Victory of season: Defeated the Houston Astros 15-7 (June 15) Worst Loss of Season: Beaten by the Minnesota Twins 1-19 (July 26) TRADES: - The Royals traded LF Scott Podsednik (.281) to the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor leaguers Lucas May & Elisaul Pimentel - The Royals traded OF Jose Guillen (.271) to the San Francisco Giants for a player to be named SEASON STATS: So far the Royals have lost 9 of their 12 games against the Minnesota Twins The Royals have lost 8 of their 15 games against the Chicago White Sox The Royals have won 5 of their 8 games against the Cleveland Indians The Royals have won 5 of their 9 games against the Detroit Tigers Best Royal batting average: 1B Billy Butler (.309 average)* Most Royal home runs: SS Yuniesky Betancourt (14 home runs)** Most Royal RBI: SS Yuniesky Betancourt (63 RBI) & 1B Billy Butler (63 RBI) Most Royal wins: SP Bruce Chen (9 wins, 7 losses) Best Royal ERA: SP Zack Greinke (3.81 ERA) Most Royal saves: RP Joakim Soria (36 saves, 2nd most in the American League) * (Not counting former Royal LF Scott Podsednik [.310 average]) ** (Not counting former Royal OF Jose Guillen [16 home runs]) Kansas City Royals team batting average = .274 (the 3rd best in MLB) Kansas City Royals team ERA: 5.06 (the 2nd worst in MLB) Kansas City Royals team fielding percentage = .980 What are your thoughts on the Kansas City Royals?
